Gerhard Müller, an East German citizen, wanted to take his family on holiday to Bulgaria in 1975. He could not afford a hotel and planned to spend the nights in the family's Trabant. So he had the idea of building a tent on the roof. The prototype was built in 14 days, weighed 40kg and was successfully tested in the process. The model was patented and built in small series.
