Catechism Information
While performing ablution, an area equal to three fingers of the hand should be wiped once with the wetness of the hand, and this is sufficient. For this purpose, the socks must be worn while ablution, the socks must completely cover the parts of the foot that need to be washed during ablution, and must be made of a durable and solid material. The ability to walk approximately 6 kilometers with the mest or to stand upright when released is mentioned as a measure of this durability and strength. There should be no holes, slits or tears on the part of the socks below the heel, below or above the heel, allowing three of the toes to enter, and the socks must not allow water to get into them. Wiping can be performed on socks covered with leather or with claws on the bottom. Abu Yusuf, one of the Hanafi jurists, and Imam Muhammad are of the opinion that it can be done on thick and invisible felt and wool socks, without requiring the condition of having claws attached to the bottom, and a group of jurists are of the opinion that it can be done on socks without requiring these conditions.
Circumstances that invalidate ablution are also called masah on mest. If the socks on which the wiping has been applied come off or are removed from the foot, water entering the socks wets more than half of a foot, and expiration of the wiping period invalidates the wiping. The duration of wiping on the mest is one day and one night (24 hours) for non-travelers, and three days and three nights (72 hours) for travelers.
This period starts from the first hadath, that is, the first situation that invalidates the ablution, after the socks are worn while having ablution. After this period is over, the feet should be washed with water to perform ablution, and if necessary, the socks should be worn again. On the other hand, a person's ablution by washing his feet will not be invalidated by taking off and wearing the socks as long as his ablution continues. A person who has ablution by wiping over his socks and takes them off can complete his ablution by simply washing his feet.
